YOAST XML Sitemaps and Google Search Console: Step-by-Step

Activating XML sitemaps using the Yoast SEO plugin and submitting to Google Search Console.

What’s an XML Sitemap, and Why Should You Care?

Imagine your website is a treasure chest, and Google is a pirate trying to find the gold. An XML sitemap is like a treasure map that says, “Hey, pirate, here’s where the gold is buried!” In less pirate-y terms, it’s a file that tells search engines about the pages on your site, how often they’re updated, and how important they are. This helps Google crawl and index your site more efficiently.

And guess what? Yoast SEO makes creating this map as easy as waving a wand (or clicking a button).

Step 1: Activate Your XML Sitemap with Yoast SEO

  1. Install Yoast SEO (if you haven’t already).
If you’re using WordPress, head to your dashboard, click Plugins > Add New, and search for “Yoast SEO.” Install and activate it. Boom—you’re halfway to SEO greatness.
  2. Navigate to the Yoast SEO Settings.
Once activated, click on SEO in your WordPress sidebar. Then, click on Settings. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a secret chamber filled with SEO goodness.
  3. Enable the XML Sitemap.
In the Settings menu, click on the Features tab. Scroll down until you see “XML Sitemaps.” Toggle the switch to “On.” Congratulations! You’ve just activated your sitemap. Yoast will now automatically generate and update it for you.
  4. View Your Sitemap.
Want to see your shiny new sitemap? Scroll back to the Features tab and click the question mark next to “XML Sitemaps.” Then, click “See the XML sitemap.” This will open your sitemap in a new tab. It’s not the most exciting thing to look at (it’s just code, after all), but it’s your code, and it’s beautiful.

Step 2: Submit Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

Now that your sitemap is ready, it’s time to hand it over to Google. Think of this as giving your treasure map to the pirate captain.

  1. Log in to Google Search Console.
If you don’t have an account yet, head to Google Search Console and sign up. It’s free, and it’s one of the best tools for understanding how Google sees your site.
  2. Add Your Website Property.
Once you’re in, click on “Add Property” and enter your website’s URL. Follow the steps to verify ownership (this usually involves adding a meta tag to your site or uploading a file—Yoast can help with this if you’re not sure how).
  3. Submit Your Sitemap.
After verifying your site, click on your property in Search Console. In the sidebar, click on Sitemaps. You’ll see a field where you can enter the URL of your sitemap. For most Yoast users, the sitemap URL will look like this:
    https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml
Enter that URL and click Submit.
  4. Pat Yourself on the Back.
You’ve just told Google where to find your treasure! Over the next few days, Google will crawl your sitemap and start indexing your pages. You can check back in Search Console to see how many pages have been indexed and if there are any errors.

Pro Tips for Sitemap Success

  • Keep Yoast Updated: Yoast regularly releases updates to improve functionality and security. Make sure you’re using the latest version to avoid any hiccups.
  • Check for Errors: Google Search Console will notify you if there are issues with your sitemap (like broken links or pages that can’t be indexed). Fix these ASAP to keep your site in Google’s good graces.
  • Don’t Overthink It: Once your sitemap is set up, Yoast and Google will handle most of the heavy lifting. You can focus on creating awesome content while they do the technical stuff.

Final Thoughts: You’re Now an SEO Wizard!

Activating an XML sitemap with Yoast SEO and submitting it to Google Search Console might sound intimidating at first, but it’s actually a straightforward process. And once it’s done, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that Google can easily find and index your content.
